Economy:

Central Bank expects 5% GDP growth this year. It said that after an estimated contraction of 8.2% last year, Malta’s GDP, will grow by 5.0% this year, by 5.5% in 2022, and by 4.7% in 2023. That is in line with an assessment by credit rating agency Moody’s which last week projected growth this year of 5.1 per cent. It also said that despite the sharp contraction in 2020, the labour market showed remarkable resilience. Unemployment initially rose during the first wave of COVID-19, but then declined, as fiscal measures were supportive of employment.

Maltese pharmaceutical company Pharmadox plans expand operations by generating 50 new jobs and €3.5 million of investment. The company collaborates with more than 50 manufacturers in nine different countries outside Europe and their work involves importing, testing, packaging, and product certification. The investment will enable Pharmadox to extend the Good Manufacturing Practice license issued by the Medicines Authority in Malta.

Investment:

Revolut obtains specialised banking licence in Malta allowing it to provide limited banking services. To date, Revolut has recorded over 190,000 customers in Malta, and is confident that their wide range of products and services will provide customers in Malta with more control, value, and security than traditional banks.
